IF WE DO NOT TAKE GOOD CARE OF OUR DRAINS NO ONE ELSE WILL. HOW DO WE TAKE CARE OF WHAT WE CANNOT SEE? BY PROPERLY DESPOSING OF LEFTOVER GREASE AND FOOD SCRAPS, WE CAN ALL AVOID THE “FOG” FATS, OILS AND GREASE THAT COMES FROM THE MEAT WE PREPARE, COOKING OIL, BUTTER, SHORTENING, LARD, AS WELL AS OUR EVERYDAY FOOD PRODUCTS SUCH HAS MAYONNAISE, SALAD DRESSING, AND SOUR CREAM.   TURNS OUT “FOG” AND FOOD DEBRIS POURED DOWN OUR DRAINS CAN RESULT IN A VERY NASTY BUILDUP IN THE PIPES AND CAN CAUSE OUR DRAINS TO BACKUP, RESULTING IN EXPENSIVE PLUMBING REPAIRS TO GET OUR DRAINS CLEARED.

HERE ARE A FEW TIPS TO TAKE GOOD CARE OF OUR DRAINS:

  • SCRAPE OR WIPE DOWN COOLED FAT OR GREASE FROM YOUR COOKWARE AND DISHWARE AND DISGARD IN THE TRASH.
  • POUR OR SCRAPE GREASE INTO A STURDY CLOSED-LID CONTAINER, LIKE AN EMPTY PICKLE JAR, COFFEE CAN CONTAINER OR AN EMPTY JAM JAR FOR EXAMPLE, AND THEN DISPOSE IN THE TRASH.
  • MANY CITIES ACROSS THE UNITED STATES HAVE CONVENIENT WASTE FACILITIES LOCAL CITIZENS CAN RECYCLE LARGE AMOUNTS OF COOKING OIL OR GREASE TO HELP AVOID THE CITY MAINTAINED SEWER SYSTEM FROM HAVING BACKUPS OF THE CITY’S SEWER SYSTEM. CHECK YOUR LOCAL COUNTY WEBSITE FOR THE NEAREST LOCATION WHERE YOU LIVE.  SOME CITIES EVEN HAVE A SPECIFIC DAY TO ALLOW LOCAL CITIZENS IN THE COMMUNITY TO BRING THIS TYPE OF WASTE, AS WELL AS NON-RECYCABLE WASTE TO A SPECIFIC DESIGNATED LOCATION.
